An array of motivational theories are there to improve motivation in education. Among those, the ARCS model explains how the students’ desires should be customised for an effective outcome. So, it is suggestive for all the educators and teachers to follow this strategy to motivate their students at schools.
Simply this is a motivational strategy designed to use in the education sector. But, it is important even to improve motivation in the workplace or to promote social and personal goal-oriented tasks.
The four letters presented in the ARCS model explains four basic principles of this concept. The meanings of the abbreviations presented in the word can list as follows.
A – Attention
R – Relevance
C – Confidence
S- Satisfaction
So, when it takes all these principles together when establishing educational goals, it is more possible to expect successful outcomes.
The basic principles of the ARCS model also explain the meaning of abbreviations hidden inside its name. So, as a teacher or an educator, you must have enough understanding on what is the descriptive idea of those words to promote learning through this motivational strategy.
Well, the first principle of this model is to getting attention. Since there are students with varying intelligence level, everyone will not show the same interest in subject matters. But, as a teacher, you have a responsibility to improve their attention. But, arousing interest is a must.
Probably you can select different teaching and learning methods to be successful in this step. Often, a short story at the beginning of the lesson, and an engaging game or group activity can be the better choices to arouse interest. Once the student seems interested to listen to the rest of the lesson, you should smoothly move into the second step.
The second most important motivational step in teaching following the ARCS model is making relevance in between aroused interest and the supposed lesson. So, often, you may move into the lesson by making a connection through experiences and theories or the story and the principles of the lesson.
Once the discussion moves gradually into the relevant subject matters, the teacher can use different materials in learning to explain relevant concepts.
The learning and teaching through the ARCS model are not as easy as completing within a few study hours. So, often, it will take time to finish a lesson. But the average time taken to complete a lesson will be less than the teachers who followed traditional methods of teaching.
The biggest advantage of this method is promoting confidence in learning. Once the student feels the lesson is relevant to their lives and for future ambitions, they may work confidently. So, making confidence among followers is easy. The increasing expectancy towards successful learning outcome may be the secret behind this confidence.
As the final step of the ARCS model, they discuss how the satisfaction increased with confident learning. Often, it leads by extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors.
If a student works for higher marks, they will be satisfied after receiving their result sheet with expected marks. And, if another student works for gifts or rewards after getting a merit pass they will also be satisfied. So, the ARCS model is focusing on fulfilling the educational goals of teachers, students and even parents.
Usually, a teacher or an educator has the biggest part in increasing motivation in education. So, they should have enough understanding about what are the available theories and methods to boost motivation while teaching.
Similarly, if the stage has customised to utilize the ARCS model in-depth, first of all, there should be detailed training programs for teachers. This is the responsibility of administrative authorities. Next, there should have enough assessment criteria to evaluate teaching and learning methods that use motivational strategies. But, it should never stop at the point and assessing the students’ behavioural and mental status as with those motivational teaching practices are also a must.
The use of motivation in education is an important aspect of successful teaching and learning station. It can influence both teachers and students behaviours, outcomes and even institutional success. Even though there are many motivational theories which are describing what is motivation, what is happiness and even the benefits of motivation related to educational sectors, today we have selected the ARCS model for the discussion.
